George Hook in Sligo
Published on Dec.01, 2009
About this video
Newstalk presenter George Hook has taken a shine to Sligo, particularly to our pedestrianised street. The well known Cork man gave the people of Sligo a voice during “The right Hook” which was broadcast live from Sligo earlier today. He tells SligoTV what has attracted him to this particular cause and Councillor Jude Devins explains why he is the only councillor who voted in favour of leaving O’Connell Street pedestrianised.

Cant believe that George is so arrogant ! Us!! the people want to be able to get through Sligo and be able to get from East to West without going around the whole town. If I want to give directions from Dunnes Cranmore to Tesco, it is almost impossible. No wonder people will not shop in Sligo as you cannot access the town and parking is nearly impossible if you do get in. George I’m surprised at your biased view. O’Connell st can be closed when the infastructure is in place. Give a more balanced view next time as its plain to be seen who asked you to do your show from here.

has anyone ever met one of these mythical creatures who want that road opened. I expect they are some sort of troll creatures who obviously need traffic passing overhead. took a walk down o’connell earlier – muckied me up good. this town is truly run by halfwits, we should be calling for they’re heads on sticks.

population of Sligo town at the last census stands at 18,000…..if only 2,800 people signed the petition then it seems to me that the other 15,000 constitute the silent majority.
why do the people of Sligo have to/are willing to settle for one thing or the other…put the eastern bridge in a proper location that can facilitate a bypass in the future(not another mid-block route) give the people of cranmore the regeneration they deserve and then plan for the pedestrianisation of the town centre.
why settle for less?

i think from a pearints point of view its better to keep the street closed because of the children. they got so used to the idea of running from side to side now that putting cars through what they se as a safe zone could result in a child getting hit by a car

johnt
By your logic 17,400 people want it pedestrianised as the only submission for the re-opening of the street garnered just 600 signatures.
I really don’t believe your that stupid so try some informed comments instead of misleading ones.

My god! As someone who drives from East to West on a daily basis, it’s never taken me more than 10 mins to go round the town. When O’connel street wasn’t pedestrianised, it was still quicker to go round the long way because it was quicker…If it wasn’t so ridiculously insane, it would be funny

Well .. the street is now re-opened to traffic .. and its still a nightmare .. saw an ambulance trying to get thru it last Sunday and there was no where for the cars to pull into to let it pass. The new bollards are dangerous especially as they are no where near the kerb .. people trip on the kerb and hit the bollard .. I hope Sligo CC have money for all the claims that going to come up! this is such a disgrace that O’Connell Street was reopened again.
