Celebrity Jigs and Reels 2010

Celebrity Jigs and reels saw 14 well known Sligo people take to the stage for one night in the hope of raising money for their chosen charity. Joseph Cullen and Aoife McDonagh dancing for North West Down Syndrome took first prize and awarded their charity the winning sum of €1,000.

After a vibrant performance Joe Shannon and daughter Orla finished in second place receiving €500 for the MS Therapy centre. The judges had such a tough decision to make that they decided upon a joint third for Tom MacSharry, his dance partner, Elaine Kelly – March and Enda O’Hara and Mary Daly who won €300 each for St. Joseph’s special needs school and the Neo-Natal unit at the Sligo General Hospital respectively.

The other chosen charities were St. John’s hospital, the North West Hospice, the Special Olympics, the Irish Pilgrim Trust, STOP –the suicide support organisation, Irish Guide dogs association, friends of Sligo General Hospital, Irish Wheel-chair association, the Simon Community and the Tubbercurry day care centre.

Sligo General Hospital Musical Society

The Sligo General Hospital Musical Society celebrated it’s thirteenth annual panto with Knight Fever.

The hilarious musical had crowds laughing their socks off in the Hawkswell Theatre each night.

We captured the best bits and interviewed stars of the show Niamh and Deirdre.

Mayor faces protestors as Christmas lights switched on

Mayor Jim McGarry turned on Sligo’s Christmas lights at 4pm on Saturday.

Protestors, who don’t want to see O’Connell Street re-opened to traffic, were there to voice their opinions. Councillor McGarry and two protestors spoke to SligoTV about their conflicting ideas.

Sligo’s got talent – The final

After 11 weeks of hard work and tense moments, the Beat It dance crew were crowned the winners of Sligo’s Got Talent. The competition began with 21 contestants and saw seven acts compete on the final night. That seven was reduced to four and after performing once more Beat It stole the show.

Sligo International Choral Festival

46 choirs from across the Country and abroad came to Sligo to compete in the 22nd Sligo International Choral festival. The weekend event was an a complete success and Chairperson, Joe Kelly explains how they organised the festival. We also have a chat with two singers from the Baldonnel choir….

Sligo’s got talent

Sligo’s got talent began two months ago with 26 contestants and now there are only 8 acts left. Last week saw Jamie Callaghan eliminated after he faced Martin Lawrence in the bottom two. One of the favourites, Dean Mahon chats to SligoTV after his performance and lets us in on his plans for the competition.

Sligo’s most talented school

Summerhill College took home the coveted title of most talented school in the fundraiser organised by the Sligo Musical Society. The competition held in the Sligo Park Hotel saw three acts from the Mercy College, the Ursuline Convent, the Grammer School and Summerhill College, compete to win a €500 cash prize. Andrew McGarry and Keith Phillips were crowned the winner’s making Summerhill proud.

I102-104 presenter Mary McGill was a guest judge on the night, and of course SligoTV had a chat with the italk host to find out more about this fascinating lady and we also caught up with the winner’s of Sligo’s most talented school.

The Sligo Santa Run Launch

Sligo’s first ever Santa run will take place on Sunday, December 20th at 10am. The aim of the fun run/walk is to have participants spread Christmas cheer by dressing up as Santa Claus. The costumes are provided to each runner as part of the admission fee and they endure the 5k run as Santa to raise money for the Special Olympics. Blue Raincoat Theatre Company – At Swim Two Birds

The world reknowned Blue Raincoat’s, are engaging and energethic in their unique take on At swim two birds. The Sligo based theatre company present a world-premiere stage adaptation of Flann O’Briens, 1939 metafictional masterpiece. 

Blue Raincoat actors, Kellie Hughes and Ciaran McCauley tell SligoTV, how they manage numerous, quick character changes. The play runs in the Factory Performance space until Saturday, November 15th.

O’Connell Street will re-open to traffic

Over one hundred protesters gathered outside Sligo’s City Hall to lobby the Borough Councillors ahead of their meeting to re-open O’Connell Street. The campaigners spirits remained high for the duration of the meeting with music provided by the Samba Band. Seamus Kealy, spokesperson for the citizen led group, delivered the bad news to the crowd. After three years of pedestrianisation, a council vote of eleven to one outweighed the 2,600 names on the petition to keep Sligo’s main street free from cars. Jude Devin’s of Fianna Fail was the only councillor to defend the pedestrianised street. Let us know your opinion on the subject in the comments section below….
